The court on Saturday gave a clean chit to Leader of Opposition in the UP Assembly Lalji Tandon in the saree stampede case, which had claimed lives of 21 women.

Special additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) Dr Bal Mukund accepted the final report filed by the police in the case here on Saturday. He observed that no case was made out against the BJP leader on whose birthday the saree distribution function was organised on April 12, 2004 at a park in Mahanagar and 21 poor women were killed in the stampede.

The court observed that Ajay Shankar Rai, the Additional Superintendent of police, investigated this case and gave a clean chit to Tandon on the ground that the BJP leader had come to the function only for a while and the stampede took place after he had left the venue.
