The Special Task Force (STF) has arrested three policemen in Hamirpur district for alleged involvement in smuggling of firearms and cartridges. These policemen used to sell firearms stocked in the police armoury to criminal gangs at premium rates, a police officer said. The arrests were made on Saturday night.

The arrested policemen — identified as Satya Prakash Tiwari, Jahan Singh and Brijendra Singh — were posted in the police armoury and allegedly running the racket from a petrol pump in front of the superintendent of police (SP) office. Two carbines, a rifle and cartridges, were recovered from their possession.

As the police are trying to find out if other personnel are involved in the racket, the trio will be taken on remand for interrogation. A police officer said the STF began a probe and zeroed in on these three constables after receiving a tip-off that a gang was running an arms smuggling racket in Kanpur, Hamirpur and Banda.

This is not the first time that one of the policemen, Brijendra Singh, has fallen foul of the law. A police officer said earlier an FIR under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (punishment for rape) was registered against him at Mahila police station in Hamirpur. The investigation in the case is continuing. Later, an FIR under Section 406 (criminal breach of trust) was registered against him after he booked the vehicle of a travel agency and reported that it had was missing. Singh was suspended in 2005 but reinstated on court orders in 2011.
