District magistrate of Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district slapped a fine of Rs 500 on an office clerk who was found chewing paan in office hours on Friday. He also took notice of the jeans, which the clerk was wearing, and issued a warning.
During a surprise inspection of the collectorate office, DM Surendra Singh warned officials against consuming paan, gutka and smoking tobacco during the office hours.
The fine came a month after the DM held a meeting with all collectorate staff and asked them not to consume tobacco during work hours. He had also asked the staff to wear presentable clothes and specifically banned jeans on office premises.
During an inspection on Friday, Singh noticed Anwar Husain Quraishi, a clerk in special land acquisition office, wearing blue jeans. “I asked him to explain why he was wearing jeans in the office. He remained quiet and turned towards a nearby dustbin to spit out the paan he was chewing,” said the DM.
“Chewing paan and wearing jeans are a clear violation of work orders,” he added.
Considering that Bareilly collectorate is a tobacco-free zone, several people(outsiders) were being fined for consuming tobacco inside collectorate premises by city magistrate, but this is the first time when an employee was fined.
“I hope the fine will deter other employees from consuming tobacco inside the collectorate and they will follow the prescribed dress code,” Singh said.
