With the state and centre governments signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU), Gorakhpur inched closer to getting an AIIMS on Thursday.

“Uttar Pradesh will get its first AIIMS by December 2019, while its OPD complex will be completed by September 2018,” said Anita Bhatnagar Jain, additional chief secretary, Medical education, UP.

While she signed the MoU on UP’s behalf, Sunil Sharma, union joint secretary, health, represented the government of India.

As per the MoU, the AIIMS will have 750 beds, an academic block, shelter homes for attendants, a guest house, 172 residences, hostel for 120 male and 240 female under graduate students, PG hostel for 599 students, and another one for 432 nursing students.

“While the 300 bed wing will be ready by December 2019, the capacity will be raised to 500 beds for patients by March 2020 and complete 750 beds will be ready by June 2020,” said Jain, after signing the MoU.

The trauma centre there will be functional by March, 2020.

The entire campus is in Mahadev Jharkhandi area in Gorakhpur and is of 45.326 hectare area. The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 22, 2016.

Once operational, the AIIMS is expected to give a big relief to patients from eastern part of the state, who have to travel to Lucknow or New Delhi for better treatment.

The AIIMS will have three main wings – surgical, medicine and obstetrics and gynaecology. Total number of departments will be 29 under these wings.
