Police inspector and encounter specialist, Sanjay Rai, who was known for his expertise in crime detection, himself got involved in crime to win over his 23-year-old lady love.
A police probe has revealed that Rai, 38, who is at large, was the mastermind in the sensational killing of his paramour’s cousin -- class 8 student Maaz Ahmad, 14, on May 29. He hired four shooters to execute the crime, of which two were arrested on Sunday.
Rai’s domestic help, Ram Babu, who was also instrumental in the crime, landed in cops’ net while four other accused were yet to be caught.
According to the investigation, there was a ‘love triangle’ angle to the story. Rai wanted to frame a youth, Akmal, a taxi driver, who was also in a relationship with the girl.
The shooters were sent to the girl’s house with the instruction to kill any member of her family. As fate had it, Maaz became their target, when he opened the door to the assailants that day. The boy had been staying with the girl’s family in Faridinagar locality of Indira Nagar and pursuing his studies in Lucknow.
SSP J Ravinder Goud said Rai was possessive about the girl and was desperate to knock Akmal out of his love story.
He said the entire conspiracy was exposed on Sunday after the arrest of two shooters -- Ajit Rai and Rahul Rai -- and the domestic help. Goud said two other shooters -- Bunty and Pahalwan, and two other persons including Sanjai Rai’s friend Atul were also on the run.
The SSP said Rai used his clout to settle his personal scores and had even used his official phone number to call the shooters.
“Sanjay Rai has been placed under suspension after his name surfaced in the crime. Departmental inquiry has also been initiated against him. His termination would be recommended to the senior police officers,” added Goud.
Sanjay Rai’s call details confirmed that he was in frequent touch with the shooters and his domestic help before and after the killing. He hired shooters for Rs 2.5 lakh through one Sandip Rai, who is serving life sentence in Azamgarh jail.
The shooters also used Sanjai Rai’s Alto car and took it along after they were not paid the ‘supari’ amount’, said the SSP and adding, “Rai got the car theft FIR lodged at Gomti Nagar police station through his brother Pradeep Rai three days after the crime.”
The inspector’s domestic help confessed that Rai was in an extra-marital relationship with the girl for the last three years. She is daughter of a slain police constable. Goud said Rai and the girl were in the relationship till March 2013 before she came in touch with taxi driver Akmal.
The SSP said, “Rai’s ties with the girl had soured following her intimacy with Akmal. He was aware that the girl’s family did not approve of her relationship with the taxi driver. Rai thought that if any member of the girl’s family was harmed then the first suspect would be Akmal.”
Goud said Rai even tried to frame Akmal by tipping off his colleagues about the girl’s relationship with the taxi driver. But his planned failed with the arrest of his domestic help, who confessed to the entire plot, he added.
