TWO DAYS ahead of the court hearing on the state government’s controversial move to shift the Gomti Nagar hostel, in a u-turn of events, the UP sports directorate has asked hostellers to go back to the Gomti Nagar stadium hostel.

The directorate has also decided to restore all facilities inside the stadium for sportspersons.

On July 10, the state government had ordered the shifting of the Gomti Nagar hostel to KD Singh Babu stadium, leading to widespread protests.

Along with 24 hostellers, coaches living at residential flats inside the stadium, too, were asked to vacate the premises.

Following the state government decision, all sporting activities inside the stadium had come to a halt.

Around midnight, on July 10 itself, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court stayed the state government's move to shift the hostel.

In its last hearing, the court had asked the state government to explain why no sporting activities were allowed inside the stadium and the need to shift the hostel.

The case is scheduled to come up for hearing again on September 5.

Sports persons welcomed the decision to restore sporting facilities inside the stadium and to allow hostellers and coaches to take back the possession of those rooms.
