The death toll in the spurious liquor tragedy went up to 32 on Monday, even as dozens still battle for life after consuming hooch in Etah and neighbouring districts.
Twenty eight people have died in Etah and four in Farukhabad, taking the total to 32, officials said.
“As many as 28 persons have died in the district in the liquor tragedy,” said Ajay Yadav, district magistrate, Etah. He said the toll was 21 till Sunday and seven more died overnight.
Ajit Kumar, SDM of Kayamganj in Farukhabad, confirmed the four deaths. Three persons had died till Sunday and another died later, he said.
The spurious liquor manufactured in Tapua village in Aliganj area of Etah is being sold in many villages of Farukhabad also. This product is available in polythene pouches priced at Rs 10. The poverty-stricken villagers consume this liquor as it is cheap in comparison to branded liquor.
Nearly 50 people were admitted to Saifai hospital with alcohol poisoning. Of these, the condition of 13 was stated to be critical. The victims admitted to the community health centre in Aliganj were referred to Agra.
The funerals of 22 victims of the tragedy took place at the cremation ground in Aliganj on Sunday.
The condition of over two dozen people admitted in various hospitals in Etah and Saifai, after they consumed the spurious liquor, is said to be critical.
The main accused, Sripal, has been arrested and 11 officials from the excise department and police have been suspended in connection with the tragedy.
The DM has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased.
