Union minister for women and child development Maneka Gandhi laid the foundation stone of a 1000-bed shelter home in Vrindavan for widows on Tuesday.

To be built at a cost of Rs 54.5 crore on Sunrakh road in Vrindavan, the shelter home ‘Swadhar Grih’ would provide better living conditions, vocational training and medical facilities to the widows.

The UP government has provided land for the shelter home.

The minister said a survey has been conducted by the Centre to investigate cases of harassment of women. She said in most of the cases, the harassment was due to property disputes.
