The state police are likely to declare a reward on the head of police inspector Sanjai Rai, who has been absconding for over a fortnight. The cop who is an expert in electronic surveillance has been dodging police teams frequently by changing his locations and cell phone numbers.
Rai has been on the run after his involvement surfaced in the sensational murder of class 8 boy Maaz in Indira Nagar on May 29. His name came to fore after his close aide and two hired shooters were arrested on June 9 in connection with the boy’s murder.
“Officers are planning to announce a reward on Rai to avoid embarrassment due to the police force’s failure to arrest him,” said sources in the police department. They said senior police officers, including sleuths of the Special Task Force, had a meeting over the issue two days ago, after which a recommendation was made to announce reward on Rai.
A source said the police had completed all the paper work to announce the reward. The reward would be announced by an additional director general level police officer, who is personally supervising the murder investigation.
The probe so far has revealed that Rai masterminded the boy’s killing to implicate one Akmal, who had come close to his ladylove. The boy was a relative of Rai’s ladylove and stayed with her family in Indira Nagar. He was sprayed with bullets by four assailants who barged into his house. Rai’s plan was to frame Akmal in the murder, said cops.
