The state government on Thursday announced a CID probe into the fake encounter of a criminal called Pinto Mishra by the Allahabad police in September, 2006.
The shootout, which had been recorded on camera, was telecast almost a year after it occurred on Wednesday.
A shoot-out between the Allahabad police and gangsters is shown in the clips. A constable and one of the assailants were killed.
Another criminal’s palm was blown off and a sub-inspector suffered bullet injuries.
Home Secretary Javeed Ahmad told reporters that the crime branch of the CID (CBCID) has been asked to investigate all aspects of the fake encounter which took place on September 19, 2006.
“Action against the policemen involved in the encounter will be taken only after the investigation is completed,” said Ahmad.
The NHRC has served a notice on the state government, seeking an explanation for the incident. However, Ahmad said the government had not received the notice yet. Moreover, Ahmad pointed out that the routine magisterial enquiry into the incident has not come in either.
DGP Vikram condemned the fake encounter and promised strict disciplinary action against the constables seen in the clips.
The clips show that Pintu was shot dead in cold blood, though the criminals had surrendered. According to information received by the Allahabad police, Pintu Mishra of Varanasi had come to Allahabad, with accomplices Jitendra Mishra and Vinay to eliminate Sujit Pandey. The latter was then lodged in Naini Jail.
Police cornered the gangsters at Civil Lines and opened fire in broad daylight. Pintu, who had killed a constable by throwing a bomb at him, was surrounded and killed.
