Three men abducted a widow from her house in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district on Tuesday night, and gang-raped her in a moving car. She was found unconscious near her village the next morning.
The woman – who is in her early forties – lives in Purwa. Her late husband’s brothers are in the liquor trade.
Police said it all began when the culprits looted a liquor outlet belonging to one of the brothers around 9 pm that night. They held him and his helper at gunpoint, and called up the widow from his cellphone. Identifying themselves as excise officials, they asked her to step out of the house because they “would have to search the premises”.
The woman did as she was told, only to be whisked away. Even as the village headman informed the police, spurring them to seal all the exits of the village, the three gang-raped the woman in the car over the next few hours.
The woman has filed a complaint, and a search has been launched for the three culprits. Unnao superintendent of police Neha Pandey said they are scanning CCTV footage from a petrol pump where the three halted for refuelling after abducting the woman.
