A 25-year-old woman was burnt alive allegedly by her husband and relatives at Hathras in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday night. The incident occurred after the victim, Sonam, reportedly objected to her husband’s extra-marital relationship with another person.

Waheed Khan, a resident of Jama Masjid in Khair, had married his two daughters off to the sons of one Liaqat Ali from Lala Ka Nagla area in Hathras four years ago. While the elder daughter – Rehana (28) – was made to wed Sauqi, Sonam entered into a marital alliance with 26-year-old Mister.

The deceased’s relatives alleged that Ali’s family had been torturing the two sisters since the day of their marriage. Their worst fears came true on Wednesday night, when Rehana called them to say that Mister had joined hands with his mother and a few other relatives to murder Sonam.

The victim’s sister said Sonam had become suspicious after a woman called Mister on his phone that night. When she questioned him about it, Mister and his mother locked her up in a room. She was set afire soon afterwards, Rehana said.

Kotwal police station in-charge Suryakant Dwivedi confirmed that the woman had succumbed to burns. “A case has been registered on the basis of an FIR lodged by the woman’s family. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination,” he said.

Waheed Khan has also accused the accused’s family of torturing Rehana and Sonam for additional dowry, and not allowing Sonam to rest after bearing two children a couple of months ago.
