State-owned UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (UPRVUNL) and the central government PSU Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd (NLCL) signed a joint venture agreement (JVA) to set up a 2,000 MW thermal power plant at Ghatampur (Kanpur), at a function presided over by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav here on Saturday.

Asking the officials of both the corporation to commence the work on the project at the earliest, the chief minister hoped the new plant would help the state meet its power requirement. The Cabinet gave its nod to the setting up of the plant in the joint venture last week.  The state government has permitted the use of 2500 acres of land and 80 cusec water required for implementation of the project. The irrigation department has assured supply of water from the Fatehpur canal.

According to the calculation of Central Electricity Authority, Uttar Pradesh will get 64.39% of power produced from this plant. Industrial development commissioner and principal secretary, energy, Anil Kumar Gupta said that keeping in view the rising power demand of the state, the UP government had requested the government of India for allocation of 75% power generated from this power generation plant.

UPRVUNL managing director, Dheeraj Sahu, said the estimated cost of this project was Rs 11,128 crore. He said that reliable and quality power would be available as the project was located close to power load centre.
