Concerned over increasing crime against senior citizens, Uttar Pradesh police have directed the station house officers (SHOs) to prepare a list of senior citizens residing in the respective police station areas.

A register of senior citizens will be maintained in the police stations with the name, residential address, mobile number, name of domestic help and visitors. Policemen will visit senior citizens or contact them on mobile phones to know their grievances which will be redressed on priority.

Inspector general (law and order) Hari Ram Sharma said 21 cases of crime against senior citizens were registered in various districts from May 1 to July 31. The police have lodged FIRs against 53 accused and 28 of them have been arrested. With one accused having surrendered in court, the police have launched a drive to nab 24 others who are untraceable.

He said police personnel will download the UP-100 app on the smartphones of senior citizens so that they can contact the police in an emergency.

Senior police officers will review measures taken for the safety of senior citizens at each police station in the districts, he said.

Crime against senior citizens will be reviewed regularly at the districts, police range, police zone and police headquarters level.
