Two months after it was closed for laying mastic on its road, the flyover from Mithaiwala crossing to PICUP Bhawan in Vibhutikhand was reopened for traffic yesterday.
“The mastic work on this bridge is finished and now similar work would be undertaken on the flyover from PICUP crossing to Lohia. The Mastic-asphalt is an expensive compound, which increases the strength and shelf-life of a bridge. Moreover, it leaves no air void in the road, thus preventing water to seep in and destroy it,” said an official of the Public Works Department (PWD).
The flyover’s closure had become a cause of trouble for commuters of Gomti Nagar, Indira Nagar and Faizabad road, because the entire traffic load from these areas had shifted to the second flyover, running from Lohia Park to PICUP, leading to heavy traffic jams on that bridge for the last two months. Notably, the process of constructing mastic roads takes time because it is a long procedure, said officials.
First, the mastic asphalt is cooked at a temperature of 200 degrees Celsius in a sealed container at the site itself and is laid on the road in a liquid state, after which the hot asphalt is allowed to cool for at least for forty-eight to seventy-two hours.
