The Vidhan Sabha Marg and its adjoining areas remained choked for five hours on Tuesday as shiksha mitras staged a massive demonstration outside the Vidhan Bhavan.
It all began at 11 am when thousands of contractual teachers hit the street demanding regularisation and increase in their remuneration. Leave alone private vehicles, the protesters did not even let ambulances to move through and forced them to take other routes to rush patients to hospitals.
The situation took an ugly turn around 3pm when the protesters pelted commuters with stones and cops resorted to cane-charge in retaliation. Commuters had a tough time coping with the traffic jams.
Dinesh Yadav, circle officer, Hazratganj, said the protestors had blocked the road for five hours and created problems for commuters. Some commuters even sustained minor injuries. “We would register FIR against the protestors. The trouble- makers would be identified and arrested on the basis of the video footage of the protest,” he added.
The protestors not only created chaos on the roads, but also misbehaved with commuters, especially women. As the traffic snarls showed no signs of let-up till 3 pm, passengers missed flights and trains. “It has become a usual sight now. The administration should seriously consider shifting the dharna sthal from here,” lamented Shyam Sunder, a commuter.
Road diversions added to the woes of commuters, who were left stranded for hours, battling with the heat. Though policemen did their best to clear the traffic jams, their efforts did not achieve the desired results.
