A two-member team from World Bank would hold discussions with senior housing department officials over funding of various transport projects in the state, including the proposed Lucknow Metro Rail project, on Friday.

This would be the second meeting of the WB officials with the state government officials to assess financial assistance required for major initiatives in the urban transport sector. Principal secretary Pravir Kumar would preside over the meeting.

Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) would make a presentation of the proposed metro rail system for the state capital, on the occasion. “The original detailed project report, prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation experts, has to be modified with changes in alignments on the routes suggested for the service,” said the official.

A DMRC team had visited the state capital on March 15 and surveyed the alternative alignments, now that the entire service has been planned on an elevated system.

“We expect the revised blueprint with alternative routes to be in by the next two-three months. Steps are afoot to set up a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to drive the project, which would obviously require some initial capital to start with,” said another official.

“We have identified major transport projects for cities like Varanasi, Kanpur, Meerut, Agra and Allahabad etc. that would be taken up for discussions,” said a senior official.

These projects have already been included in the comprehensive mobility plan drafted by the Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC) for these cities. NOIDA-Ghaziabad and Meerut-New Delhi corridors are other cities where similar plans are afoot.
