Weavers in Uttar Pradesh to launch stir against GST on handloom products
The decision was taken at a meeting of the UP Momin Conference. The organisation claims to represent weavers and artisans involved in the handloom trade.
Weavers and artisans in Uttar Pradesh are upset over imposition of Goods and Services Tax (GST) over handloom products and have threatened to launch stir if it is now withdrawn by the government.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the UP Momin Conference (UPMC)here on Wednesday. The organisation claims to represent weavers and artisans involved in the handloom trade.
“The imposition of additional 5% GST on cotton hank yarn and standard 12% on all handloom products will sound the death knell of the trade not only in UP but all over the country,” said Buniyad Hussain Ansari, president of the UPMC. He said a meeting of the weavers and artisans involved in the trade was called to discuss the situation after imposition of the tax. “We have decided to hand over a memorandum stating our demands to the UP governor and wait for the government’s response before deciding the future course of action on the issue,” Ansari said.
