Yoga guru’s sons among 4 nabbed

lucknow Updated: Apr 27, 2013 11:17 IST

Familiarity breeds contempt, nay crime! This was what proved on Friday when the police collared four men for hacking the Mehra couple to death and recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 80 lakh from the killers’ possession.

Two of them are the sons of yoga trainer Shiv Kumar who had imparted the training to the couple from December 2012 to February 2013.

The trainer’s sons along with their two friends hacked the couple, RN Mehra, 61 and Lata Mehra, 58, to death at latter’s Gomti Nagar residence on April 14 and decamped with jewellery worth Rs 80 lakh.

Police said trainer Shiv Kumar Shastri’s sons Mayank and Mohak Shastri used to visit the Mehras along with their father regarding yoga and acupressure training. But, the Mehras used to call them frequently for health related problems and personal therapy sessions.

The police said this brought the three closer to the couple and probably gave the two an opportunity to get details about Mehras’ jewellery locker.
The duo along with freinds Vijendra Kumar Pathak and Shiva Mishra hatched the plan to kill the couple and steal the jewellery.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) J Ravinder Goud said, “The trainer’s sons loved lavish style and required money to start a business. They hatched the loot plan. They later involved their two friends in the plan.”

Goud said the accused had tried to commit the crime even 15 days ago but arrival of some visitors to the Mehras at the last moment foiled their plan.

He said, “On the day of the incident, Mohak and his friend Vijendra went inside the Mehras’ house at 2.30pm while two others Mayank and Shiva stayed outside. After initial interactions, Mohak and Vijendra attacked the couple with a knife, which they carried along with them and brutally stabbed them. The duo even used three kitchen knives to kill the couple.” They stayed inside for around an hour, collected the valuables, sneaked out of the house and all the four vanished on Wagon R,” the SSP said explaining the killers’ modus operandi.

Goud said Mohak hurt two right hand fingers while pulling out the knife from RN Mehra’s body. He was bitten by Lata Mehra on the left hand during the scuffle.
The SSP said the hair recovered from Lata’s grip matched with Mohak’s and later through electronic surveillance, the cops reached them all one by one.
