The local police have arrested a 24-year-old budding actor after recovering 40hm heroin and 198 sedative capsules from his possession.
The accused, Simarjit Singh alias Sam, a resident of Gurpal Nagar, has worked in a Punjabi film and featured in music videos.
The anti-narcotics and anti-illicit liquor smuggling wing of Ludhiana police commissionerate arrested the accused from T-point of Gurpal Nagar on Saturday.
Giving details about the arrest, wing incharge sub-inspector Harbans Singh said they arrested the accused from a checkpoint following a tip-off.
He said Simarjit was passing through the area on his motorcycle, and on spotting the checkpoint, tried to flee. However, a chase ensued and the cops nabbed him, following which the heroin and capsules were recovered from his possession.
According to Singh, the heroin cost Rs 20 lakh in the international market.
Singh claimed that the accused had confessed to have taken to drug peddling to make easy money as he was not getting work in films. He had also worked at custom clearing agent at Dhandhari Dry Port, Ludhiana.
The accused told the police that he used to procure the contraband from a farmer of Tarn Taran and used to sell it among drug addicts. Singh further said.
A case under section 22-61-85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) Act has been registered against the accused at Daba police station.
