In a shocking turn in the abduction case of BCom student Manju Ravat, 18, the police came to know that the girl was found dead a few days after her abduction.

Her body was found in a canal near Amargarh of Sangrur on March 27, 2012, six days after the abduction took place.

The Amargarh police had kept the body for at least 72 hours in the civil hospital at Sangrur and finally cremated it when it was not identified.

The Jamalpur police arranged for the clothes which the body was wearing and the photographs taken by the Amargarh police.

The family of Manju Ravat identified the clothes and photographs on Wednesday. The development in the case proved a catastrophe for the family. Victim's mother Kusum Ravat was inconsolable and falling unconscious again and again after she came to know about the news of daughter's death.
She had been blaming the police for inaction.

In a chocked voice, Kusum said, "I was running from one officer to another to get registered a case against the accused, but the police took no action till nine months. Had the police taken action in time my daughter could have been saved."

Sub-Inspector Davinder Singh, SHO of the Jamapur police station, said the accused who were arrested for abduction had not given any lead about the girl. The police had started investigation on their own and came to know that a girl was found dead in a canal at Amargarh in March last.

"We contacted the Amargarh police and brought the clothes and photographs to Ludhiana for identification and the family of the abducted girl identified the belongings," the SHO added.

"The girl had died due to drowning as per the post-mortem report of the Sangrur civil hospital, but the Amargarh police had not registered any case in this context. We have initiated investigation after the lead. The police can add more charges against the accused who are already lodged in the jail, after investigation," he added.

Kusum Ravat said her daughter was abducted on March 21, 2012. The police had registered a case in this context on December 12 and arrested four accused - Gagandeep of Partap Nagar of Mundiyan, Kamaljit of Gobind Nagar, Madanjeet of Ghai Market of Mundiyan and Amandeep Singh of Gobind Nagar - on January 6.
