With many new services brought under the ambit of service tax this financial year, the central excise and service tax department geared up to achieve the increased revenue targets for the fiscal.
Sources with the department said the commissionerate was given a target to raise Rs 530 crore from the service tax as compared to Rs 375 crore in the 2012-13 fiscal. The department had achieved the target last fiscal raising Rs 400 crore from service tax.
The official said: "As many new service have been brought under the purview of service tax this financial year, the department is hopeful of achieving the new target," said an official with the department.
"At present, there are a total of 19, 000 service tax payers registered with the department at the commissionerate. However, the department will conduct a survey to register new and leftover tax payers.
"Services such as air-conditioned restaurants, beauty parlours and saloons and parking facilities too have been brought under service tax. The inclusion has created new tax payers considerably that will ultimately help realising the department the new revenue target."
