Police on Saturday booked the owner of a textile unit for allegedly thrashing a labourer on the premises of Division Number 3 police station on July 14.

The accused identified as Jagdish Gupta, owner of Jeevan (Modi) Textile on Rahon Road in the Maherban area, was booked under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

The accused, however, could not be arrested as he was admitted in Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

The victim, Chander Shekhar, had quit his job as Gupta did not pay his due amount and allegedly harassed him. Shekhar, however, kept visiting Gupta to get his dues.

On July 14, Shekhar called up Gupta and demanded his money, but Gupta told him that he should abstain from calling him or else he would register a complaint against him.

Gupta lodged a complaint at Division Number 3 police station where Shekhar was called. Gupta allegedly beat him up in the presence of police which led to widespread protest by workers, who also went on strike.

The Karkhana Mazdoor Union and Textile Hoisery Kamgaar Union joined hands to fight against the alleged injustice and also protested thrice outside the Division Number 3 police station.

Soon after the report of registration of FIR against the accused owner, the labourers called off the strike.

Textile Hoisery Kamgaar Union president Rajwinder said a victory rally was also organised on Saturday after the police registered a case against Gupta.

“The strike was called off as our demand of an FIR against the accused was accepted. But, the due payment of Shekhar has still not been made by Gupta,” said Rajwinder.

Division Number 3 station house officer Rajinder Kumar said a case was registered against Gupta for allegedly beating labourer Shekhar, but Gupta could be arrested as he was admitted in hospital.
