The Communist Party of India (CPI) Ludhiana unit has demanded arrest of the culprits who tried to kidnap former director general of police (DGP) (prisons) Shashi Kant, who is spearheading the movement against drug smuggling in the state.

Party members carried out a protest rally from Ludhiana railway station to Clock Tower on Sunday. They also demanding CBI probe into drug racket case.

Kartar Singh Bowani, secretary, CPI Ludhiana unit, said, “This attempt has come in the wake of allegations by the drug smuggler Jagdish Bhola, who has blamed Bikramjit Singh  Majithia of patronising the drug racket in Punjab.”

Arun Mitra, assistant secretary, said, “Our state is reeling under the menace of drugs with lakhs of youth ruining their lives.”

CPI leader DP Maur said, “Without political patronage drug business cannot sustain. The party warned that drug mafia is becoming powerful in the state, which is a serious threat to the democracy and human resource development. This is also one of the major causes of spurt in crime in the state.”

He said it would be appropriate for Majithia to resign on moral grounds and cooperate in the probe. The government should also ensure security to Shashi Kant, Maur added.
