Finally, the Punjab Agriculture University (PAU) Pensioners Association formally split on Tuesday with a group led by some senior functionaries deciding to form a new body - PAU Retirees Welfare Association (Regd).
Earlier on April 8, unruly scenes were witnessed at the general body meeting of the PAU Pensioners Association, when a faction led by Sukhdev Singh conducted elections of the new body in an objectionable manner, and was made president of the newly-formed body while SP Gupta was elected as general secretary.
The new body is formed by a faction led by senior association functionary Jila Ram Bansal and former president of the PAU Employees Union DP Maur.
However, the group led by Sukhdev Singh objected strongly to the new body, claiming that the newly-formed body by a section of the pensioners was totally unconstitutional, as the body represented by him was constituted following the elections at the general body meeting on April 8.
Meanwhile, the general body meeting of the newly-formed body was held at students' home on the PAU campus, in which Jila Ram Bansal was elected president of the association, unanimously. The general body members gave all powers to Bansal to elect other officer bearers of the association.
While expressing his gratitude to the members of the association, Bansal said he would leave no stone unturned to get their problems solved. “But, this is possible only when you all back me and provide moral support,” he added.
As a result of the welfare association's efforts, He said, arrears due to revision of pay scale the payment of 30% had already been paid to the pensioners, and as far as the payment of 40% arrear was concerned, the executive would take up the matter with the authorities concerned.
He said the allotment of funds to the tune of 63 crores from the state government was under process and was likely to be received.
Bansal stated that the PAU vice-chancellor had already agreed in principle to open a single window system at the ground floor of Thapar Hall. For the establishment of pensioners' bhawan, the association would meet the vice-chancellor soon.
DP Maur, Avtar Singh Deol, former president, Charan Singh Guram, Manjit Singh Mehram, Amar Singh Sekhon, JL Narang, Tilk Singh Sangra, Ajit Singh Cheema, Charanjit Singh Grewal and Subash Bhatia also addressed the meeting.
