Director general, school education, Kahan Singh Pannu has asked heads of government schools across Punjab to purchase computers with an internet connection and printer for administrative use.
"It is noticed that heads of government schools are not aware about the emails, circulars that the education department or head office sends to them.
Neither are they aware about the circulars which we upload on the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) website. There must be many computers in the schools for students, so the school head should separately purchase a computer for his office use," Pannu told HT. The directions are for above-primary schools.
But many school heads, particular those of girls schools, say they don't have funds for the gadgets. One of the principals said, on the condition of anonymity, "It is a good move, but girls' schools have no funds as students are charged no fee. Also, rules says the school head can only spend up to Rs 5,000.
For any amount between Rs 5,000 and Rs 20,000, permission from the district education officer is required, and then up to Rs 50,000 can be spent only after permission from the director, public instructions (schools). That is a long-drawn process."
