Local deputy mayor RD Sharma of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is charged by the railway police with getting a man (21) killed because he was in love with his daughter.

Complainant Resham Singh of Model Colony in the city's Salem Tabri area is the brother of the victim, Gagandeep Singh. "On Monday night, we were riding a motorcycle to a gymnasium when near the railway tracks at Monti Wali Gali, my brother stopped to ease himself and four men following us pounced on him with a baseball bat and sharp-edged weapons," Resham said in his police statement.

Of the accused, he identified two as Sharma's confidants Ajitpal Singh and Ami. "They told my brother before killing him that it was a lesson for having an affair with Sharma's daughter. Later, they made a call from the spot to the deputy mayor and told him they had killed Gagandeep," Resham alleged in his statement.

Resham said that a dying Gagandeep had told him that he loved Sharma's daughter and so the deputy mayor had threatened to kill him. Gagandeep himself was accused in a case of attempt to murder.

Resham Singh accused the police of delaying the registration of the case because of Sharma's status. In the evening, Gagandeep's family staged a protest at the Jalandhar bypass. Inspector Baldev Singh Randhawa of the railway police said a manhunt for the accused was on.

Sharma's defence

Asked to react to the allegation that he had got a man killed, RD Sharma dismissed in as a Congress conspiracy. "I was not even aware of the murder," he said, adding: "The Congressmen made the aggrieved family register a case."
