The event to apprise the media on Wednesday about the upcoming Indian International Cycle Expo to be organised here from February 22-24 witnessed a high drama with some of the manufacturers alleging the organiser of the expo, Annex Media, of poor publicity and high prices for the space booking.
Chairman of Hi Bird cycles RD Sharma alleged that even as the organising agency had fixed high prices for putting up stalls, the poor publicity of the event was bound to make it a failure.
He said the organisers were charging Rs 5,000 per square meter for a new space and Rs 6,000 per square meter for an already built structures, therefore the manufacture would have to shell out heavy amount for putting up their stalls at the expo.
Thus, Sharma said that he was not hopeful of participation of many manufacturers/ dealers in the event.
Demanding an inquiry into the spending of funds generated through space booking, Sharma said the rates of space booking at the expo was as high as were an expo in China, but the facilities and services provided by the organisers here stand nowhere when compared to China.
Backing Sharma, chairman of SK Bikes Subhash Lakra alleged that in view the preparations of the expo he was apprehensive of the success of the event.
On the contrary, director of Annex Media Surinder Brar said the company was spending around Rs 30-35 lakh on organising the expo, out of which Rs 10 lakh was being spent on publicity only, thus there was no question of poor advertisement. "About 25, 000 dealers across the country have been invited to participate in the expo, while 700 have confirmed their participation," he added.
Chairman of the United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers Association (UCPMA) Manjit Singh Khalsa said the allegations by the manufacturers would be probed. However, he urged the manufacturers to make the event successful, as the only motive behind the expo was to promote the cycle industry.
