Municipal corporation commissioner Rahul Tewari visited night shelters in the city on late Saturday night. The move was an effort to take stock of the condition of the destitute living in these night shelters.
MC provides basic facilities, including bedding, blankets and food to the underprivileged at these night shelters. Some discrepancies, such as lack of bedding, were brought to light during the commissioner's visit. The destitute told the commissioner that it was too cold during the night to sleep on floor without proper bedding.
During his visit, Tewari also made destitute living on roads aware about the facilities made for them at these shelter homes.
Tewari asked the officials that all basic facilities that were promised by the MC for the destitute should be provided to them without hassles. He asked the officials to provide blankets, food material and other things to the underprivileged at these shelters.
According to the Supreme Court, there should be one night shelter for a population of 1 lakh. MC is also constructing three more night shelters in different areas.
Additional commissioner Isha Kalia had also visited these shelters last week, and asked those living on the streets to go in these shelters.
