An RTI activist has accused the building branch of the municipal corporation (MC) of failing to act on more than 250 complaints regarding encroachments and construction of illegal buildings for the past two years.

In information obtained under the Right to Information Act, the MC has informed the activist that there are 266 pending references, but they don't have information whether the matters were disposed of or not. The MC has also not provided any information regarding the reasons behind failure in redressing these complaints.

Rohit Sabharwal, the RTI activist, said, "I had sought information through an application filed on February 3 about the pending references from government as the authorities are ignoring people's complaints. The information sent by MC revealed that there are 266 pending references since January 1, 2012."

The information also revealed that 240 pending references are from January 2012 to December 2013.

"The information also disclosed that the MC has failed to take action on complaints about illegal change of land use by the shopkeepers in some major markets of the city. Even no action was taken on the encroachments done in the city about which residents have complained to the MC," Sabharwal claimed.

Even after the directions of higher authorities, the officials concerned had not acted to fulfil the directions, he further claimed.

When contacted, assistant town planner (headquarters) Kamaljit Kaur said, "When any complaint comes to us, we send it to the officials concerned. We don't have information whether the zonal assistant town planners have sent any reply to the complainants or not regarding action taken on complaints."

She added that they would look into the matter.
