Gopal Dass Muni finally ended his indefinite fast after chief minister Parkash Singh Badal constituted a four-member committee to look into his demand of protecting cows and chalking out modalities for getting cow grazing grounds throughout the state identified and evicted from illegal encroachments.
Deputy commissioner Rahul Tiwari and state BJP president, Kamal Sharma visited him at the Dussehra ground on Thursday and offered him a glass of juice, after which Muni ended his strike. He was on an indefinite strike from March 10.
State BJP president Kamal Sharma said, “Punjab government should provide a helping hand to the protection and safety of cows in state.”
He said there was a demand by Gau Raksha Andolan that wherever, according to the Revenue records, the land has been allotted for cow sheds and grazing grounds (Gau Charand Bhoomi); it should be brought to use with the help of funds allotted for the same purpose.
He said that chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has constituted a four-member committee to look into the demand.
Former minister and senior BJP leader Tikshan Sood has been appointed as the chairman, whereas Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal (adviser to the chief minister); Sunder Dass Dhamija, chairman Gobind Godam; and chairman Punjab Gau Sewa Board Kimati Lal Bhagat have been appointed as the members of the committee, which would make recommendations to the government regarding land utilisation for the purpose of cows and further legal actions would be taken to acquire land in favour of the society.
The committee would hold its first meeting in Chandigarh on March 19.
Parveen Bansal, district BJP president said, “Our party has always tried to maintain the country's rich culture and tradition and cows have always been an indispensible part of Hindu culture. Hence every effort has been made by our party for the uplift of cows. Orders have been issued by the chief minister to all district commissioners across the state to identify land reserved for cow grazing in the revenue record.”
Madan Mohan Bansal, Rajeev Katna, Sanjay Kapoor, Rajinder Bhandari, Raja Ram and several others were also present on the occasion.
