Sri Akal Ustat Seva Mission, Chamkaur, will organise a national-level competition for Gurbani singers. Contemplated on the line of successful television shows such as “Indian Idol” and “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa”, the competition will see select young Gurbani singers from across the country fight it out in the finale to be held in Ludhiana in May.
This was informed by the organisation's president Ukpal Singh in a press conference held in Ludhiana on Saturday. “The aim is to promote Gurbani among the youths. The idea came from the reality shows that are a rage among the audience,” he said.
Young singers between the age of 15 and 26, belonging to any religion or state, can come for the audition for the contest that will open from April 2 and conclude on April 16.
Auditions will be held at Central Khalsa Orphanage (Amritsar), Gurudwara Dukh Nawaran Sahib (Gurdaspur), Guru Amardas Public School (Jalandhar), Gurudwara Singh Sabha (Ropar), Gurudwara Angeetha Sahib (Mohali), Gurprasad Sahib Ghumman Nagar (Rajpura), Gurudwara Shri Guru Nanak Darbar, Dhobiana Basti (Bathinda), Gurudwara Gur Gyan Prakash, Jawaddi Taksal (Ludhiana) and Gurudwara Sri Pahadi Wala, Grater Kailash (New Delhi).
The 40 chosen candidates will further compete in Ludhiana for place in the list of top 10 in a mega audition scheduled for April 24. The finals will be held between May 4 and May 14 at Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan, Ludhiana.
The prizes include Rs 1.21 lakh cash award for the winner, Rs 1 lakh for the first runner-up, Rs 71,000 for the second runner-up and an electronic tablet for the third runner-up. The rest of the six candidates too will be awarded with a tablet each.
Asked about the fairness of the competition, Singh informed that Sukhwant Singh, principal at Jawaddi Taksal and Bhai Gurmeet Singh Shah Huzuri Raggi Jatha Darbar Sahib will judge the contestants on their ability to perform.
The show will be telecast on a Punjabi television channel and is being sponsored by an Italy-based global lifestyle brand.
