All the members of Punjab Ophthalmological Society (POS) and ophthalmologists, wearing black badges, staged a protest against the alleged high-handedness of sales tax department for conducting raids on the hospitals and houses of medical specialists and ophthalmologists across Punjab and particulary in Patiala.

The POS executive committee had decided to observe December 30 as the protest day. “It is being projected by state sales tax department that doctors are not the end users and must pay VAT on the medicines and other materials purchased by them for their hospitals and nursing homes. But according to the existing rules and court judgements doctors are the end users and hence they are not required to pay VAT,” said Dr GS Bajwa, secretary of Ludhiana Ophthalmological Society.

Dr Bajwa added that the POS members had worn black badges to show solidarity with the medical fraternity. The members also condemned the raids conducted by Punjab sales tax department and opined to have early resolution of this problem by the state government.
