Procurement of wheat in the district is underway with various agencies buying 1.52 lakh metric tons in different grain markets by Thursday.
Deputy commissioner Rahul Tewari on Friday said 1.68 lakh metric tons wheat had reached various grain markets of the district, of which 1.52 lakh metric tons was bought by different agencies. The sale was much higher this year as compared to the last year when only 92.42 thousand metric tons wheat was procured, he added.
Of the total procurement, Punjab State Grains Procurement Corporation Limited has purchased 20,660 metric tons, Punjab State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation Limited - 28,642 metric tons, Punjab State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited - 29,893 metrict tons, Punjab State Warehousing Corporation - 2,3636 metric tons, Punjab Agro - 15,621 metric tons and Food Corporation of India has purchased 30,741 metric tons wheat. Private agencies too have purchased 2,950 metric tons of the produce.
Meanwhile, Tewari directed officials to ensure that the wheat procured by various agencies was lifted from grain markets within 72 hours of purchase and farmers were paid within 48 hours.
However, president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and member parliament Partap Singh Bajwa on Friday visited the grain market at Khanna and heard the problems faced by farmers at the market.
