A part of a 60-year-old two-storey building collapsed following incessant rain in Islamganj area on late Saturday night.

Though nobody was injured in the incident, the remaining building is posing a threat to area residents and passers-by.

According to the building owner, he had asked the municipal corporation officials to demolish the building several times, but no action was taken. The building has three shops on the ground floor and rooms on the first floor.

A case regarding possession of one shop in the buildings is sub-judice, as the tenant was not vacating the shop.

Bhola Ram, owner of the building, and a resident of Karimpura, said he wanted the building to be demolished by MC, as it was posing a threat to people living close to it.

He said the remaining part of the building should be demolished as soon as possible because it could lead to tragedy.

“I had asked the person who was running a shop to vacate the building as it was not safe. However, he demanded money from me to vacate the shop. On the other hand, the MC did not take any action on the fragile structure that resulted in this tragedy,” Ram said.

A local, Harish Kumar, said the incident took place on Saturday night.

“No one got injured in the incident, as due to the rain, nobody was on the road. The area has many houses, and people are often seen near this building,” Kumar said.
