With their school principal on leave for over a month, the staff of Government Senior Secondary School, Raikot, are puzzled about the future of funds allocated to the school under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan.

If not utilised by March 31, the Rs 2.75-lakh grant will go down the drain.

The principal, Jasbir Kaur Arora, joined the school on January 8. She later proceeded on leave on February 1, and is yet to return. This despite the fact that her leave was cancelled by the district education officer (DEO), secondary, on February 26, and she has been served a show-cause notice.

Meanwhile, as the drawing and disbursing officer's (DDO) powers lie with the principal, her absence has affected the functioning of the school.

The school staff rue that while they received the salary for January on February 23, they were yet to get the salary for February.

Besides this, the school had provided school uniforms to 150 students of Classes 6, 7 and 8 in January, but the payment of Rs 60,000 is yet to be made to the shopkeeper. This has forced the school staff to manage funds on their own, so that the payment can be made.

Talking to Hindustan Times, a teacher of the school, requesting anonymity, said, “In our school, 14 posts of major subjects are lying vacant. The school has funds, but we are not able to utilise them in the absence of the school head, who has the DDO powers.”

She added that the school had purchased school uniforms for students of Class 6, 7 and 8 in January, but was yet to pay for them.

When contacted, DEO, secondary, Paramjit Kaur Chahal said, “We issued a show-cause notice to the principal of GSSS, Raikot, last week, besides cancelling her leave. We are yet to receive her reply. However, if she does not reply in the next few days, we will notify the head office.”

Director general school education, Punjab, Kahan Singh Pannu said, “I am aware that the principal of GSSS, Raikot, is not attending the school for the past one month, as an inspection team that had visited the school recently has submitted a report to me. I have written to higher authorities about the issue.”

Despite repeated attempts, the principal, Jasbir Kaur Arora, could not be contacted.
