Shopkeeper, accomplice held for stealing batteries

The Shimlapuri police on Monday arrested a shopkeeper and his accomplice and recovered 55 batteries that they had allegedly stolen from a shop at Simlapuri.


The accused tried to flee in their car, but their bid to escape turned futile as their car rammed into a road divider. The police also confiscated their car.

The accused have been identified as Vishal Kumar, 30, of Sangrur, who runs a battery shop, and Baljit Singh alias Bhinda, 28, of Hoshiarpur.

Inspector Jaswinder Singh, SHO police station Salem Tabri said the police had put up a naka at Canal Bridge on the Gill road and were checking the vehicles.

The police asked the accused to stop for checking. Instead of stopping they fled towards the Gill road. The police then gave them a chase. The accused lost control over the car, which rammed into a footpath near Arora Palace Cinema. The police arrested the accused and confiscated the car. The police recovered 55 batteries from their car.

The SHO said Vishal Kumar was already facing trial in several criminal cases. He said more information could be revealed from the accused during questioning.
