Taking a leaf out of a recent Hindi movie's book, miscreants have started disguising as policemen to conduct robberies.
According to the city police, since the release of Akshay Kumar-starrer Special 26, there has been a sudden spurt of robberies involving thieves impersonating cops.
In the movie, Akshay Kumar plays the role of a swindler, who conducts raids at traders' shops posing as a CBI official.
Taking note of the issue, city police have sprung into action.
Top officials of the Ludhiana police commissionerate have directed the officials concerned to be alert towards such incidents and take steps to prevent them.
The high-ups have directed the station house officers (SHOs) to hold meetings with businessmen and industrialists, especially gold traders, to educate them to be wary of strangers.
Following the meeting, Daresi SHO sub-inspector Sanjiv Kapoor has been arranging meetings with gold traders in Saraffa Bazar.
He told the traders that if anybody approached them claiming to be a police official, before following his directions, demand his identity card.
SI Kapoor also gave the traders phone numbers of police officials, and asked them to call immediately if anyone approached them on the pretext of investigation. The cops hope to nab these miscreants on the basis of information provided by traders.
As many as three miscreants, impersonating police officials, had intercepted a Mumbai-based jeweller at Mall road on February 13, and snatched his diamonds worth Rs 12 lakh.
On February 10, a conman dressed in police uniform looted a mobile phone and Rs 34,730 from a tractor-trolley driver and his nephew near Karabara Chowk.
