Tehbazari wing for Rs 5,000 penalty on contractor

Taking note of the increasing complaints against the parking contractors along service lanes on the Ferozepur road, the tehbazari wing of municipal corporation (MC) has recommended a penalty of RS 5,000 against the contractor of the parking lot in front of Silver Arc mall.

The recommendation comes following five written and several verbal complaints against the LRY contractor. The Rs 5,000-penalty will be deducted from his security.

Incidentally, the same contractor manages several other parking lots, including the one of Mandi Board. The contractor earlier also managed the Feroze Gandhi market parking lots where a series of complaints were received against him.

He also won the contract of multi-level parking near Zone-A office of MC in May this year; however that contract was cancelled before allotment and the parking is now managed by the tehbazari wing.

According to the complaints, the contractor is charging Rs 30 for the first hour of parking in front of Silver Arc mall. As per the instructions of MC, Rs 10 is supposed to be charged for the first hour and Rs 20 for the next hour (total Rs 30 for two hours).

Jasdev Singh Sekhon, superintendent of tehbazari wing of Zone D, said he had sent a proposal to the headquarters for deduction of Rs 5,000 from the security amount deposited by the contractor for allotment of parking.

“Penalty of Rs 1,000 per written complaint will be imposed in the first incident, and the amount would increase to Rs 5,000 if the complaints continue,” Sekhon added.

The official said if the complaints kept pouring in, the MC would cancel the parking contract, adding that he would take appropriate action against the contractors concerned if written complaints were received.

Meanwhile, another contractor Radha Raman Contractor Pvt Ltd is also allegedly charging Rs 30 for the first hour of parking in front of Ansal Plaza mall on Ferozepur road.

Rajwinder Singh, an NRI from Canada, said, “The persons manning the parking lot were rude and they demanded Rs 30 even for the first hour, while I was told by my relatives that it was Rs 10 for the first hour and Rs 20 for the next hour. It seems goons are blatantly extorting money from residents, with the authorities' permission.”
