In what could be a scenario straight from the movies, a woman indulged in selling drugs to make quick money to bail out her beau, who is lodged in Ludhiana central jail for drug peddling. However, as luck would have it, she was also arrested by the anti-narcotic and anti-illicit liquor smuggling wing of the local police.
Identified as Sonia Rani (30), a resident of Tajpur Road, she was arrested with 30gm heroin near civil hospital on Tuesday. According to police, the recovered heroin costs Rs 15 lakh in the international market.
Giving details, wing incharge sub-inspector (SI) Harbans Singh said assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Tarsem Singh had established a check point behind the civil hospital following a tip-off.
Meanwhile, Sonia passed by the area, and was stopped for checking. On being frisked, cops found 30 gm heroin from her possession.
Stating that the woman was a drug addict, the SI said Sonia had left her husband and two children around eight years ago after her relations with her husband and in-laws turned sour.
She then came in contact with Gurinder Mani, and started living with him in a rented accommodation at Tajpur Road.
Harbans said Gurinder possessed a criminal background and was booked in several cases in various police stations of Ludhiana.
Around two months, Salem Tabri Police had arrested him with 40 gm heroin. However, he was released on bail.
But he did not mend his ways and took to drug peddling again, following which he was arrested by the Basti Jodhewal police and sent to jail again.
He claimed that Sonia had confessed that as she had no other means to earn money, she started selling drugs through the connections of her paramour, so that she could bail him out from jail.
The SI said the police would question her about the connections from where she procured the drugs.
