How to prepapre your bike for a snowy and foggy winter

Here are a few tips to help you maintain your bike during this winter season.

1 Prep your wheels: Studded snow tyres are a good bet, especially if you live in an area where it snows. Mountain bike tyres, cyclocross tyres, or any tyre with a thick tread are ideal, Snowy roads and street slicks are, obviously, a bad combination.

2 Keep it clean: If you’re riding on frozen roads, chances are road workers are sprinkling salt on the road for traction, which is corrosive to your bike. So take care to wipe down the bike when you are done riding. Also, wash your bike as often as possible. Keep chain and brakes well-oiled to avoid accidents in snowy roads.

Bike3 Use a fender: A fender is an absolute must for the slushy, sloppy days. Full fenders will not only keep the salty, oily spray off you, but it will minimise how much gets thrown on the sensitive parts of your bike, such as the brakes, the crank bearing and steering bearing.

4 Light up: When the weather is foggy, visibility in roads minimises. For your safety, use a bright, white headlight and red tail light at all times, even during the day.

5 Wear layers: Moisture-wicking base layers work to remove the moisture from your skin and keep you warm and dry. But be sure to add gloves, a face mask, and a thin head covering under your helmet.
