Not content with taking gorgeous pictures of their grub, Instagram users have now become adept at spotting trends. And the latest is an interesting spin on burgers or sushi, or both.
Forget soy sauce, Japanese cuisine is getting a revamp: Introducing the sushi burger, the perfect mix between American delicacies and Japanese culinary art.
Some beautiful soul decided to marry sushi with the burger to create this glorious culinary work of art that’s currently taking the social media — especially Instagram — by storm, thanks to its natural #foodporn abilities. Likes are guaranteed... just look at this one below!
🍙 VEGAN SUSHI BURGER 🍙 Loaded with Teriyaki Shredded "Chicken"(not real chicken, the secret ingredient: jackfruit!), avocado, pickled ginger, vegan mayo & red cabbage. This is dedicated to my beautiful sushi loving friend Kim, @brusselsvegan (a.k.a @bestofvegan) in honour of all you do for the vegan community. The recipe for this wee creation will be in the comments! 💃💃 **note: use a fork or chopsticks to eat it! This burger is just for fun! It can be messy to eat, so if you aren't up for the challenge simply enjoy this as a sushi bowl or a rice ball. Namaste. #bestofveganburger
The recipe is simple enough: Replace the two bread buns with two rice pancake-style galettes and fill them with healthy (and yummy) ingredients like salmon and avocado. As The Telegraph explains: Chefs craft the rice into the shape of a burger. It is sometimes left just-cooked, sticky and fresh, and sometimes fried for ease of eating. Yes, there are deep-fried versions.
Also included are traditional sushi components such as raw fish, ginger, seaweed and wasabi, but with a burger shop twist. Some versions contain pulled pork and pickles, while others sport a big, juicy burger patty. Pictures below:
So, sushi burgers are popping up everywhere on Instagram. But don’t get sucked in by the pretty pictures. These sushi burgers might look incredible, tasty and heavenly, but they will leave you with broken dreams. A burger bun made of sticky rice just doesn’t work.
Burgers are supposed to be something you can pick up in your hand and enjoy anytime, anywhere, right? But sushi burgers?
Even Sam admits it can be ‘messy to eat’, recommending chopsticks or a fork. If you don’t have either, we strongly recommend against eating it at your desk with your favourite white shirt on.
