Popular Telugu actor Rakul Preet Singh, who made her Bollywood debut with the film Yaariyan (2013), says she had to work really hard to be where she is today.

“When I started, I had to make sure that I take up projects that would help me become a better actor. Being an outsider [in Bollywood], it wasn’t a cakewalk. I didn’t get a so-called 100 crore launch in the industry. So, I was taking one step at a time to make things work out for me,” says Rakul, who will be seen next alongside Sidharth Malhotra in Neeraj Pandey’s Aiyaary, her second Bollywood film.

Asked if she was ever subjected to casting couch, she says, “Though I have heard people talking about it [in the film industry], but personally I didn’t face any such thing till now — neither in Telugu film industry nor in Bollywood.”

She adds, “I have been working in the Telugu film industry for the last few years now, and they have immense respect for talent. They treat stars and newcomers in the same way as any veteran. But, it goes without saying that the industry is huge where both bad and good people reside. So the way you project yourself is important and one must be smart enough to understand who is what.”

Rakul will be paired opposite actor Mahesh Babu in AR Muragadoss’ upcoming bilingual film SPYder where she is reportedly playing the role of a doctor.
