The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2
Direction: Bill Condon
Actors: Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart
It's the fifth and final edition of a franchise which has rocked viewers, especially adolescent females, across the world. Based on the swoony novels of Stephenie Meyer, the series has smartly packaged the cross-species love story between a pretty-boy vampire and a likeable mortal. For extra effect, there is the element of a werewolf who has consistently displayed his brawn as well as brain.
A potent combo of the almost-plausible and the far-out, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 banks once again on tension-packed combats, mythology bequeathed by Bram Stoker's classic novel 'Dracula', and this time around, a more generous dose of romance.
Over the years, the three central characters Bella (Stewart), Edward (Pattinson) and Jacob (Taylor Launter) have become pin-up staples. Director Bill Condon, who also helmed the previous installment, celebrates the long-awaited consummation between Bella and the undead Edward through gauzy close-ups. At the outset, the film displays a lyrical quality.
The mood, after all, has to be a tad poetic what with Bella having given birth to a baby girl who, by the way, is oddly named Renesmee.
Edward, after battling temptation, has given Bella that love bite, ensuring another generation of photogenic vampires. For those who came in very late, Edward belongs to a strange, animal blood-quaffing clan.
For a while, there has been some respite in their feud with a vicious rival faction whose leader (Michael Sheen) mistakenly believes that the half-human, half-vampire offspring is a threat. Suffice it to say, because of some weird circumstances, the new-born girl is destined to become Jacob's soul-mate in the future.
A battle royale ensues all over again with endless heads being decapitated and bodies being ripped apart right before our startled eyes. Admittedly, the action set pieces are spectacular and the pace maintained throughout the running time of 115 minutes ensures that there's never a dull moment.
Twilight fans will love the wrap-up edition unconditionally. As for the others, no problems either. The technical bravura, the intriguing plot and the charismatic Stewart-Pattinson-Lautner add up to a supernatural saga which is worth the price of a ticket.
