A 17-year-old girl had a terrible time this Diwali after a cyber-fraudster put her phone number on a porn website, following which she started getting 200-odd calls everyday.

The victim, who is a Class 12 student in a South Mumbai college, learnt about this fraud the hard way when she received lewd calls and messages.

An officer from Tardeo police station said, “On November 1, her number was uploaded on a porn website, following which she started getting lewd calls and messages. The victim initially couldn’t understand but later she came to know from a number of callers that her number was being displayed on such websites. She later checked the website herself, following which she came to know about the entire mischief.”

The victim received more than 200 calls in a day, said police officials. Tired of the incoming lewd messages and calls, the victim approached Tardeo police and registered a case against an unidentified accused for putting her phone number on a porn website. The police said even while recording her statement she was constantly getting those lewd calls.

The police have now removed her number from the website and are trying to locate the culprit. “We believe that this could be a case of personal enmity wherein someone would have put her number there just to harass her,” said an officer. The Tardeo police have also taken help from the cybercrime police.

The case has been registered under sections 354 (D) (stalking) and 500 (defamation) of the IPC along with section 66 (A) under Information Technology Act.
