Two brothers died, while their mother was injured, when the motorcycle on which they were travelling was knocked down by a speeding dumper at Chhedda Nagar signal in Ghatkopar in the wee hours of Sunday.
According to Tilak Nagar police, the incident occurred at 1.10am. They said the road is relatively empty during the night, due to which vehicles speed up. The victims were identified as Shahnawaj, 20, and Yasar Aslam Shaikh, 14, and their mother Rihana, 40.
“The three reside at Parksite in Vikhroli and were heading towards Deonar slaughterhouse to purchase sheep when the accident occurred,” said an officer from Tilak Nagar police station.
Investigation revealed that the dumper hit the motorcycle from the left side. The brothers, who were grievously injured in the mishap, were declared dead on arrival at the nearby hospital to which they were rushed. The dumper driver, later identified as Jayram Mane, 40, fled the spot soon after the accident.
He was traced and booked under sections 304A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving or riding on a public) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with section 134 (a) (b) of the Motor Vehicles Act for fleeing the spot instead of rendering help to the accident victims.
