A 21-year-old man from Ahmednagar district was arrested for allegedly posting lewd jokes outraging modesty of women on a WhatsApp group by the Bhoiwada police in the city. The accused landed in trouble when he by mistake added a woman to the WhatsApp group and she later filed an FIR against him.
According to Bhoiwada police, the arrested accused Ravi Pawar was asked by his father to save a friend’s number as his father did not have a mobile phone at the time.
By mistake while saving the phone number Pawar saved last four numbers as 3331 instead of 3531. The number he mistakenly saved turned out to be the mobile number of the complainant, a housewife living in Bhoiwada area of Dadar east.
Pawar and his friend then made a WhatsApp group called ‘Shri shiv chatrapati pratishthan’ and Pawar asked him to add few contacts from his contact list. This included number of the housewife as well.
Pawar then posted a few lewd jokes on the WhatsApp group. The woman who received these chats informed her husband and both reached Bhoiwada police station on February 29 this year. The woman also raised her voice on the group after which they started deleting members.
An FIR was registered under Section 509 ( Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and 67 (Punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) and 67 A (Punishment for publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act) of the Information Technology Act. A police team led by police Inspector Vasant Wakhare used the call data records and made a phone call to Pawar who thought someone was joking with him. He refused to come to Mumbai and cut the call.
The Bhoiwada police then reached Jamkhed town in Ahmednagar where they met his father and learnt that Pawar is a driver in Pune. They detained him from Pune and brought him to Mumbai. They first interrogated him here and then arrested him. He was produced before a magistrate’s court on Thursday and remanded to police custody till Friday.
