A 22-year-old man from Andheri was recently arrested for cheating a 17-year-old girl of gold jewellery worth Rs2 lakh after promising her marriage.
The accused, Praveen Prajapati, is from Rajasthan and worked at a grocery shop in Andheri (East).
He created a fake profile, Rocky boy, on Facebook and sent her a friend request in March this year. The duo started chatting on the mobile messenger application, said a police officer. After a few days, Prajapati proposed to her.
He told the girl that he required gold to take loan for a new business. She stole gold ornaments worth Rs2 lakh from her house and given him, added officer.
In the past month, the accused deactivated his Facebook account and stopped taking her calls.
When the girl realised that she had been cheated, she told her parents, added the officer.
Her parents registered a case against the accused on November 9.
Prajapati was brought to the police station and during interrogation he revealed that the jewellery was at his friend’s shop in south Mumbai. “The gold jewellery was recovered and Parajapti was arrested for cheating, molestation and under relevant section of POCSO,” said police inspector B Sadhunke of the Andheri police station.
He has been remanded in police custody till November 15.
