A 25-year-old woman who tried to stop a 26-year-old man’s from attempting to kill a cat was allegedly abused and molested by him in Oshiwara on Sunday around 4.30 am. The accused, Deepak Bobate, was arrested a day later.
Bobate, a Jogeshwari resident, threw a stone at a cat near Vaibhav Circle. After the animal tried to flee, he lifted a flower pot from the side of the road and hurled it at the cat, which ran away.
The complainant witnessed the incident as she was driving along that route. She stopped the car, got down and confronted the accused. Bobate asked her to leave. He then verbally abused her, making several sexually explicit remarks. The two then got into a heated argument and a scuffle took place, in which he inappropriately touched the woman.The police control room was contacted and the Oshiwara police sent a van to the spot.
Senior police inspector Subhash Khanvilkar of the Oshiwara police station confirmed the incident. He said the accused had no reason to harm the cat.
An FIR has been registered under sections 354 A (sexual harassment), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, 506 (criminal intimidation), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 427 ( mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code and section 11 (1) a (treating animals cruelly) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960. The accused was produced before a magistrate’s court and sent to judicial custody.
