A 25-year-old who is believed to be involved in more than 50 burglary cases in the western suburbs was recently arrested by the DN Nagar police. Salman Malang Gaus, alias Shaikh, operated only during daytime and would execute his plans after conducting a reconnaissance.
Gaus would befriend domestic helps, painters, or plumbers working in residential societies, and lure them into giving the flat keys for a few minutes. He would then get a duplicate key made and wait for the right opportunity to strike.
He used to live in Juhu Gali earlier, but few years ago, he moved to Shivaji Nagar in Govandi, the police said.
Gaus was arrested for three cases registered by the DN Nagar police and was later handed over to the Andheri police on Wednesday for allegedly stealing valuables worth Rs45 lakh.
In the Andheri house break-in, Gaus visited a residential building in JB Nagar area and befriended a painter, Iqbal Shaikh alias Pappu, who was hired to paint the flat. After promising a share of the booty to Pappu, Gaus took the key of the flat and used a counterfeit key for the house break-in. Gaus later decamped with ornaments.
“We have arrested Pappu after remanding Gaus. During interrogation, the latter revealed that he had sold diamond and gold ornaments to a jewellery shop in Andheri. We have called two jewellers for inquiry,” said Rajeev Chavan, police inspector, Andheri police station.
“There are several members in his family who have involved in several other house break-ins. He had committed several offences in western suburban areas such as Vile Parle, Khar and Santacruz,” said Chavan.
Gaus had stolen gold and cash worth more than Rs10 lakh from three separate houses in DN Nagar in daylight. Following a tip-off, we nabbed him last week from his residence, said a police officer.
